I see a light at the end of the tunnel – and my hopes are high for a 2021/2022 Snowbird Season. Most of us “seniors” still here in the Sunshine State have already been vaccinated. In fact, the vaccination is being offered to teenagers in many areas of the state. Most restaurants and shops are fully opened for business. The Spring-Break crowd looked to be larger than I’ve seen in my eight years here, and preparations are being made for a busy summer vacation crowd.
On the downside, however, our “Roost” is still not open for public gatherings. The Community Center staff that I talked to said they are following specific guidelines and do not yet have a set date on when they will be able to allow groups to meet there. Also, our friends from just over the northern border are in another lockdown and the date for opening the border keeps getting pushed further into the future.
It’s a quandary for the board of directors who would like to be able to share positive and definite information so that everyone could begin making their plans.
However, here are some things that you can count on: the weather will be nice, at least nicer than from where many of you will be traveling. Also, folks will be looking for other vaccinated snowbirds with whom they can play cards, pickleball, golf, etc. (The quilters connected and held their “socially-distanced” meetings this past COVID season!) Both our Website (Thedestinsnowbirds.com) and our group Facebook page (The Destin Snowbirds) will be available to share activity times and places. So, make your plans, and as you mark your calendars, be sure to circle Monday, November 15, 2021. If all goes well, that will be our Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and initial registration at the Roost from noon until 3 p.m. The first snowbird meeting would then be Tuesday, November 16, at 10 a.m. Except for the Holiday weeks, there will only be one Tuesday morning meeting until after the BIG Registration. That event is planned for Monday, January 3, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m. After that, we hope to resume the two Tuesday morning meetings at 8:30 and 11 a.m.
This has been a long and surreal year. Never again will I take the friendships and enjoyment offered by the Destin Snowbird Club for granted! I hope you have all had an opportunity to get vaccinated and have remained healthy. I will keep my fingers crossed and plan on joining all of you back at the Roost in the new, 2021/2022 season.
